Royal Glass Factory of La Granja

Fri, 20 September 2024 - Sun, 29 September 2024
The exhibition on La Carrera de Indias and the impact this enterprise had on the municipality of Real Sitio de San Ildefonso – La Granja from the 18th century onwards, thanks in part to the Royal Court and the Royal Palace.

You may be lucky enough to see authentic tibor vases, porcelain, lacquerware, and Fu lions over 300 or even 400 years old. Genuine works of art that travelled tens of thousands of kilometres across oceans and continents, from China to Valsaín and La Granja – two remote villages in the mountains of Castile…

How did they manage to do it? We will tell you all about it at the conference sessions taking place on the 21st and 28th of September at the Royal Glass Factory of La Granja, in Segovia.
The former Royal Glass Factory of La Granja is an enormous rectangular complex housing a group of buildings with a total constructed area of nearly 25,000 m². The factory was built according to the plans of the master builder of the Royal Site, Joseph Díaz, known as Gamones, between 1770 and 1784.

The Royal Glass Factory of La Granja is a unique and remarkable space where a variety of glass-related activities can be enjoyed. Visitors can explore the Technology Museum, which boasts magnificent collections of glass pieces, witness live demonstrations of glassblowing at the furnaces, receive training in various glassworking techniques, or purchase a set of glasses or tumblers handcrafted at the Royal Glass Factory from the onsite shop.

All of this is driven by the founding mission to preserve the building, the glass collections, and the glassmaking craft, establishing the factory as the leading reference site for traditional glass craftsmanship in Spain.
