Interview: Misión Hispana

Tuesday, 25 de January de 2022
A crucial element in sustaining the Hispanic Monarchy, the Empire, and Hispanic culture for hundreds of years was the Carrera de Indias—the fleets that annually connected the territories of mainland Spain with those of Spanish America and Asia (let us not forget the Philippines). This Carrera de Indias served as the umbilical cord through which Hispanic influence extended across the seas and, in return, brought countless goods and cultural elements from the New World into Europe.

To learn more about the Carrera de Indias, we spoke with Ricardo Fernández, founder and coordinator of the Museum of the Carrera de Indias (MUCAIN), about this initiative. It is a newly launched project, but one that aims to grow and introduce the general public to this maritime route of paramount importance in the history of the Hispanic world. For now, it is a virtual project, though it aspires to become a physical museum capable of attracting visitors interested in this remarkable endeavour.
