Getting to know the Segovian Pedro Arias Dávila.

Excellent discussion on the life of Pedro Arias Dávila with the writer Ricardo Fernandez from Segovia, Spain.

Pedro Arias Dávila was a prominent 16th-century Segovian conquistador and explorer. Born in Segovia, Spain, around 1440, he became one of the key figures in the history of the conquest of the American continent.

Throughout his life, Pedro Arias Dávila played a fundamental role in the expansion of the Spanish Empire in the New World, especially in the region of Panama and Central America. He was appointed governor of Castilla de Oro (what is now known as Panama and part of Costa Rica), where he led several expeditions to establish Spanish control over the region.

He is linked to the beginning of the colonisation of Panama, and was responsible for the founding of Panama City in 1519. He also participated in the famous expedition that opened the route to the South Sea, which facilitated the exploration and exploitation of new trade routes.

Dávila is known for his strong character and leadership skills, although he is also remembered for his cruel methods at times. Throughout his career, he was involved in several conflicts with other conquistadors and officials, reflecting the internal tensions in the colonisation process.

His legacy is remarkable, if somewhat controversial, as his contribution to Spanish expansion in the New World left a lasting mark, especially in the area of Panama, one of the key points of the Indies race.
